Ethel Lucile D. Smith

The 1962 Beloved Mother of the Year, Ethel Lucile D. Smith, died of natural causes August 15, 1986 at the home of her son, Dr. Thomas W. Smith, in Torrance, California.

Born in Taylorsville, Utah July 31, 1897 to Thomas W. and Nora Bennion Dimond.

Married Dr. Calvin S. Smith September 28, 1917 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

She is the mother of 13 children. Four children met accidental death.

She was the church organist for over 60 years, participating in thousands of programs as soloist or accompanist. Served as president of The Salt Lake Retired Teachers and as president of the Utah Mothers Association. Member of the Americas Club at the University of Utah. Member of the Farm Bureau and the VFW Auxiliary. Active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Received a citation from the National Federated Music Clubs of America. Had written articles accepted and published by ERA, Relief Society Magazine, Instructor Magazine and the National Retired Teachers Magazine.

Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Calvin S. Smith and her children, Mary Smith, James D. Smith, Kathleen Valois Smith, Maurine Smith, Elizabeth S. Wrathall and Lucille S. Hutchings.

Mourned and loved by her surviving children Calvin S. Smith, Jr., El Cerrito, Calif.; Dr. Thomas Wayne Smith, Torrance, Calif.; Ellen S. Robe, Ogden; Nora S. Grover, Scottsdale, Arizona; Virginia S. Schartts, Salt Lake; Claudia S. Landro, Salt Lake; 34 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday 1:30 p.m, at the Bennion 1st Ward Chapel, 6020 South 1300 West, where friends may call 1 and one half hours prior to services. Burial Salt Lake City Cemetery.
