Explanation of the Numbering System

p. iv

1 stands for Joseph F. Smith
The initial of her first name stands for each wife.
Example – 1J = The Family of Joseph F. Smith and Julina Lambson

Children are numbered in order of birth following the parents number.
Example – 1J.1 Mercy Josephine
1J.2 Mary Sophronia

A dot separates each generation.
Example 1J.2.1 Alfred William Peterson

At a glance one knows:
1. To what family one belongs by the letter.
2. To which generation one belongs by counting the dots.

To find the parents simply leave off the last number and find the number left in the preceding pages.
Example – Leave off .1 from Alfred William giving your 1J.2 who is his parent.

One who married into the family receives the same number as his spouse.

Where a couple appears as the head of a family an asterisk will indicate which is the descendant.
