Pockets Full of Candy

When Grandpapa came to see us he always kissed us, and I didn’t like the feel of his beard. He always smiled and his eyes were always sharp and piercing.

The pockets in his suit coat always seemed to be the biggest pockets in the world and he would bring out and give to each one of us peppermints and musks (which were oval shaped, scalloped, and pink in color).

Because of the flu epidemic his funeral could not be held in a building. It was held in the City Cemetery as a grave site service. It was cold and snowy and the thought of it has made me still shudder at graveside services. I have told my family I don’t want a long funeral service, but it must be held in a building.

One very interesting thing about him was how he stroked his beard, which he did often.
